The film is framed as being the recollections of Sergeant Galoup, a former French legionnaire stationed in Djibouti (he’s played with a mix of cruel reserve and vigorous physicality by the great Denis Lavant). Loosely based on Herman Melville’s 1888 novella “Billy Budd,” the film makes brilliant use with the Benjamin Britten opera that was likewise impressed by Melville’s work, as excerpts from Britten’s opus take over a haunting, nightmarish quality as they’re played over the unsparing training exercise routines to which Galoup subjects his regiment: A dry swell of shirtless legionnaires standing inside the desert with their arms in the air and their eyes closed like communing with a higher power, or consistently smashing their bodies against one particular another in a series of violent embraces.
Underneath the cultural kitsch of it all — the screaming teenage fans, the “king from the world” egomania, the instantly universal language of “I want you to draw me like considered one of your French girls” — “Titanic” is as personal and cohesive as any film a fraction of its size. That intimacy starts with Cameron’s possess obsession with the Ship of Dreams (which he naturally cast to play itself inside of a movie that ebbs between fiction and reality with the same bittersweet confidence that it flows between earlier and present), and continues with every facet of a script that revitalizes its essential story of star-crossed lovers into something iconic.
Some are inspiring and considered-provoking, others are romantic, funny and just basic enjoyable. But they all have a person thing in widespread: You shouldn’t miss them.

Taiwanese filmmaker Edward Yang’s social-realist epics typically possessed the intimidating breadth and scope of the great Russian novel, from the multigenerational family saga of 2000’s “Yi Yi” to 1991’s “A Brighter Summer Day,” a sprawling story of one middle-class boy’s sentimental education and downfall set against the backdrop of a pivotal second in his country’s history.
Seen today, steeped in nostalgia with the freedoms of the pre-handover Hong Kong, “Chungking Categorical” still feels new. An endlessly clever exploit on the public domain, “Shakespeare in Love” regrounds the most star-crossed love story ever told by inventing a host of (very) fictional details about its generation that all stem from a single truth: Even the most immortal art is altogether human, and an item of all the passion and nonsense that comes with that.

Making the most of his background as a documentary filmmaker, Hirokazu Kore-eda distills the endless possibilities of this premise into a number of polite interrogations, his camera watching observantly as more than a half-dozen characters attempt to distill themselves into just one perfect second. The episodes they ultimately choose are wistful and wise, each moving in its own way.
Looking over its shoulder in a century of cinema with the same time mainly because it boldly steps into the next, the aching coolness of “Ghost Doggy” may perhaps have seemed foolish Otherwise for Robby Müller’s gloomy cinematography and RZA’s funky trip-hop score. No-one had xxxbp a more precise grasp on how the digital age would see fiction and reality bleed into each other to the most private levels of human perception, and all four from the wildly different features that he made in his temporary career (along with his masterful TV show, “Paranoia Agent”) are bound together by a shared preoccupation with the fragility with the self in the shadow of mass media.
